Subject: Open Invention Network is expanding the Linux System Definition so more technology is protected by the community of non-aggression

Dear Truong Anh

I am writing to you to let you know that Open Invention Network (OIN) will shortly be announcing that it is significantly expanding and updating the Linux System technologies covered by its community of non-aggression. Over 750 new software packages are included in the new Linux system definition – including popular packages such as KVM, Git, OpenJDK, and WebKit. In addition, updated versions of over 1,000 existing software packages, such as the Linux kernel, Firefox, Apache, MySQL, OpenOffice, Perl, Python, and Ruby, have been included.

This will have the positive effect of broadening the technology coverage of the non-aggression community. The improved coverage of the OIN license is designed to encourage ongoing collaboration and increased investment from Linux developers, distributors, sellers, resellers and end-users.

In order to effect these changes, OIN has had to make some changes to its documentation. In addition, OIN has accommodated the needs of two of OIN’s original members – Sony and Philips – by creating a limited technology ‘carve out’ which restricts their access to only those technology areas where they actually contribute patents back into the community via the cross license. In separate correspondence you will receive a copy of a formal notice letter which outlines the changes referenced above.

I look forward to answering any questions you might have regarding the notice letter or the Linux System Definition expansion. OIN is committed to ensuring the Linux System Definition keeps pace with the rapid expansion of Linux into new markets and looks forward to supporting you in your Linux–related development activities now and in the future.

Best Regards,

Shane Coughlan
